Catapult Project Coming to an End...

Catapults are due THIS FRIDAY! I am so excited and proud of the hard work all of you have put in to your catapults...they are AMAZING! Friday will be the last day to work and Monday we will begin firing golfballs!

Next week, we move into The Chemistry of Dying! Everyone that wants to tie dye must bring in a garment by Tuesday, May 25th

The year is coming to an end, and even though I was only here for half of it, I had a wonderful time teaching each one of you...you are ALL spectacular and I wish you nothing but the BEST!

Catapult Construction...Come Join Us!

As many of you already know, we are in the process of building catapults in science. A catapult system is a great device to teach Physics concepts through. We are currently discussing the transfer of energy, force, elasticity, and Newtons Laws...all of which are NECESSARY principles to explain how and why a catapult works.

The students are in groups of 4-6 and are coming up with fantastic "blue prints" of what they want to build. They can build a catapult with an arm as big as 4 feet long, but this is NOT a requirement. I have seen a number of smaller catapults that work great! I am also NOT requiring that money be spent to build these catapults...household scraps and materials can most definitely be used. The students were shown an example of one catapult built with pens, pencils, rubber bands, and a water bottle cap. However, students do LOVE to challenge themselves in this project either way! I promise you, the rubric I use to assess the students does NOT grade based on the size of the catapult or the money spent to build.

Some students are bringing in tools from home. These tools are placed in a LOCKED cabinet and are closely watched by me. We begin the building phase, Monday, May 10th and continue for the next couple weeks. If any parents/guardians would like to help or join us, please email me at aohlander@ccsd66.org. I apologize for not having a syllabus up for this week. Due to some technical difficulties with our Roller Coaster Physics software, I had to switch our lesson plans a little. This week, we started Chapter 7 and will take an "Open Book" Quiz on Chapter 7, Friday, April 9th.

I did receive the new software, so as soon as we can get back into the computer lab, we will begin the Roller Coaster Project! It looks like our first date for that project will be Thursday, April 22nd.

Greetings! I have just returned from maternity leave and will be here for the remainder of the year. I look forward to getting to know all of you!

We will be finishing up Chemistry in the next couple months and move to Physics until the end of the year. To keep things running smoothly, I do not plan on making too many changes since you are all familiar with the way science has been run thus far. One change, however, is that my blog will be updated weekly with the syllabus for the following week. Please let me know if you have any questions about in class work OR homework! We are starting the catapult project next week. Students will be working in groups for this project, but the work will be done ALL IN CLASS. If you would ever like to see what your child is doing in science, ask them if you can take a look at their file folder. They will keep all the information necessary for this project in a folder that I provided. Most grades throughout this project are individual completion points. The only "group grade" is the actual catapult that they build. Please speak to your children about the importance of working together and everyone putting forth 100%!

Glass Slipper Project

The Glass Slipper Project is an organization that collects used dresses, shoes, purses, accessories, and upopened make-up for Chicago Public School girls that cannot afford to attend their prom. This is a GREAT excuse to do some spring cleaning and change a young girls memories-to-be!

This year I will be collecting for this program and a friend of mine will be the personal shopper helping the girls find their perfect outfit. This project is a great success. Last year, girls and their mothers slept outside the night before to get a chance to attend! If you have any of these items you feel comfortable donating, please send them to school with your child, and have them delivered to me by Thursday, April 23rd.

Thanksgiving with the Ohlanders

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. This is my husband and I with his grandmother, brother, and sister at a University of Wisconsin volleyball game. My sister-in-law, Elle, plays for Wisconsin...she is the tallest player in the history of Wisconsin Volleyball standing at 6 feet 6 inches! It is so much fun watching her play!

It was a little odd wearing Wisconsin gear since I went to the University of Illinois and that is who Wisconsin was playing! I saw so much "orange and blue" walk in and it felt funny not being in it myself. Wisconsin Volleyball has me for FOUR YEARS, but after that it is GO ILLINI all the way!!

Periodic Table of Elements Project

This week and next the students will be working on a Periodic Table of Elements Project. This project requires the students to work collaboratively in groups to produce a song, rap, poem, skit, commercial, narrative, or anything else of their choice that will help them memorize the elements of the periodic table!

They will be given all next week to work on this in class. A hardcopy of specific project criteria will be handed out to the students on Monday, December 1st.

Roller Coaster Project

The roller coaster project will begin next week and continue through the month of May. All work for this project is IN CLASS. The only homework during the month of May will be the Terminology Journal project, and students will receive a handout explaining the requirements of the journal project. The roller coaster project packets will remain at school, but I will communicate with you on a weekly basis as to what is going on in the classroom in regards to the roller coaster project! Feel free to stop by! There will be a TON of designing and building going on and I am sure many fantastic roller coasters will be created!
